GE Healthcare, a global leader in diagnostic imaging equipment and radiopharmaceuticals with over 500,000 medical devices deployed worldwide, faced significant barriers to healthcare collaboration. Up to 35 percent of patient cases were misdiagnosed due to clinicians' inability to access images, data, and medical records when needed. Healthcare providers struggled with fragmented systems, and industry analysis showed that improved interoperability could save healthcare ecosystems $30 billion annually. To address these challenges, GE Healthcare built the GE Health Cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS), creating a unified portal for radiologists and healthcare professionals to securely access, view, process, and share medical images and patient cases across enterprises.

The GE Health Cloud infrastructure leverages a suite of AWS services to deliver scalable, compliant healthcare data management. The platform runs on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances and stores close to one petabyte of medical imaging data on Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), providing the durability and reliability required for critical healthcare information. GE Healthcare uses Amazon Aurora for database services, AWS Service Catalog to automate cloud deployment, and Amazon Cognito to enable federated single sign-on, allowing customers to maintain existing credentials while accessing cloud applications. The company is also leveraging Amazon SageMaker for machine learning capabilities to support advanced analytics and diagnostic insights.

By running the GE Health Cloud on AWS, healthcare organizations can now collaborate more effectively across primary care, specialist services, and multiple care settings, while gaining secure access to advanced imaging visualization tools. The platform supports rapid global expansion, enabling GE Healthcare to deploy hundreds of applications to multiple countries quickly while maintaining governed data access for both clinical and research applications.
